Hundreds of video games – including Painkiller and those made by EA, Ubisoft, Gearbox, Nintendo, Konami, Capcom, 5th Cell, Koei, Firaxis, and more – were taken offline as GameSpy multiplayer servers did shut down on May 31.

GameSpy was a third-party technology used by publishers and developers to host online services. It was acquired by Glu from IGN in 2012. At the time, Glu CEO Niccolo de Masi said, “We expect that the acquisition of GameSpy will be earnings neutral in the near term. However, GameSpy team and technology is expected to help us drive higher monetization and lifetime value in Glu’s titles from 2013 on.”

Different publishers are handling the shutdown in different ways. Nintendo explained that it would abandon hundreds of Nintendo Wi-Fi games, as the titles relied on the same servers. Some publishers will follow suit, as it may not be financially viable to support long-forgotten or unplayed games. Others have already migrated their online services to new servers, including Steamworks.

Since today the Painkiller Gamespy Master server is down, that mean you won’t find any servers in your gamebrowser. However the few servers that are left are not offline. This means you can still connect to them via console and play. Just open your console and write /connect

Here is a list of the IPs of the server, which are still online:

Italy Killer Play 185.25.204.3:3455

    🙂
Multiplayer is now working as well as usual and closing servers is not affected. But still there are idiots who are beginning to bury him for that reason.

Found out that QTracker is hosting a master server. This is great because we can still list servers. If you’re a server administrator, add the following to your ‘host’ file. If you are a gamer/user, add the following to your ‘host’ file, usually located at “%SystemRoot%system32driversetchosts”

I can assure you, i didn’t pack anything that windows can’t do on it’s own. What OS do you have?

You can manually make the changes by adding these lines http://pastebin.com/qpGGdtF9 into your “hosts” file manually.

Your ‘host’ file is usually located at “%SystemRoot%system32driversetchosts”
