An International team of game developers <a href="http://www.med-art.info/">Med-Art</a> published some news about there current project of a new <strong>Painkiller</strong> game. The game is called <strong>Painkiller Recurring Evil</strong> and its release is scheduled for January 2012.</p>

<p>Once again you&#8217;ll have a chance to experience the magnificent dark gothic atmosphere of the good(or evil?) old Painkiller, the only true oldschool FPS tough as nails, without a trace of remorse, without a glimpse of  motion blur or other technological makeup. Just Painkiller and nothing else matters!</p>
<p>     This time you&#8217;re fighting for the freedom of your soul, and you&#8217;re going to need all your strength and courage in order to break free from a prison located in the darkest corner of the Purgatory. </p>
<p><strong>Action takes place</strong> in some completely unknown areas of the underworld. These areas don&#8217;t look ordinary at all. Each level is a brand new world, a universe with its own unique atmosphere, history and mysteries.</p>
<p>You&#8217;ll have to fight with the undead in an old gloomy abbey, on a ruined as if by an earthquakespeedway with roads and turns twisting like circles of Hell. You&#8217;ll be hunting demons amongst numerous crypts and tombs of an old London cemetery. You&#8217;ll be cleansing the old warehouse, decaying and shrouded in darkness and terror. You&#8217;ll have to stop occult rituals in an old temple complex lost somewhere in the jungle. </p>

<p>10. Run <a href="http://pkzone.org/files/misc/articles/blend.exe">blend.exe</a> in the same directory with <a href="http://pkzone.org/files/misc/articles/DM_temp.mpk">DM_temp.mpk</a> and <a href="http://pkzone.org/files/misc/articles/Obj.txt">Obj.txt</a> files. There will be created a new file named <strong><em>dm_temp_blend.mpk</em></strong>.</p>
<p><strong>Note</strong>: Painkiller&#8217;s <strong><em>*.mpk</em></strong> format operates with four texture layers, table 1.</p>

Rename <strong><em>dm_temp_blend.mpk</em></strong> to <a href="http://pkzone.org/files/misc/articles/lawa.mpk">lawa.mpk</a> and put it to &#8220;..\Painkiller\Data\Maps&#8221; directory, also unpack the <a href="http://pkzone.org/files/misc/articles/lawa_tex.rar">lawa_tex.rar</a>  to <strong><em>..\Painkiller\Data\Textures\Levels\lawa</em></strong> directory.</p>
<p>12. Open <em><strong>lawa.mpk</strong></em> with <strong>PainEd</strong>, figure 15. You should see the lava flows moving from center to outer edge.</p>

<p>At this point, the teleport is built. But so far there is no essential thing &#8211; so-called, <em>CubeMap</em> texture, which will be displayed by a teleport screen. Let&#8217;s make this texture. </p>
<p><strong>Cube Map</strong></p>
<p>1. Open your 3dsmax scene (I use, for an example, <em><strong>DM_Lockout</strong></em> scene), and create a <em>Camera</em>, where a teleport destination point is located, figure 17.</p>

<p><strong>1. Importing *.mpk to 3ds max.</strong></p>
<p>Workflow is as follows: converting <em>*.mpk</em> to ASCII and further importing an ASCII file to <strong>3ds max</strong>. As known, <strong>3ds max</strong> has no ASCII importer. Therefore, you must install this <a href="http://pkzone.org/files/misc/articles/asciiimp_max6.exe">plug-in</a>. In order to install, copy <em>asciiimp.dli</em> to <em>your_path\3dsmax7\plugins</em> directory. At <strong>3ds max</strong> startup, an error message may show up:</p>

<p>Convert <em>*.mpk</em> file to ASE format with <a href="http://pkzone.org/files/misc/articles/mpk2ase.exe">mpk2ase.exe</a>: <em>&lt; mpk2ase mapname.mpk &gt;</em>. As a result, there will be created:<br />
1. <em><strong>MapName.ase</strong></em>: materials, geometry and the 1st UV&#8217;s.<br />
2. <em><strong>2ndUVs.ms</strong></em>: a maxscript file providing the 2nd UV&#8217;s (mapping coordinates for the lighting maps).<br />
3. <em><strong>Obj.txt</strong></em>: a list of the mesh-objects and its lightmaps.</p>
<p>The import is done in two steps:<br />
1. Create a new <strong>3ds max</strong> scene, import <em>MapName.ase</em> (go to <em>Menu</em>-&gt;<em>File</em>-&gt;<em>Import</em>&#8230;, and choose <em>ASCII Scene Import (*ASE)</em> file type).<br />
2. Run <em>2ndUVs.ms</em> (<em>Menu</em>-&gt;<em>MAXScript</em>-&gt;<em>Run Script&#8230;</em>).<br />
After that, <strong>3ds max</strong> scene will contain whole <strong>PK</strong> map.</p>
<p><strong>2. Getting back the map into Pain Engine format.</strong></p>
<p>Export scene to <em>*.ASE</em> file format (check the boxes in the export dialog as shown below).</p>

Run <a href="http://pkzone.org/files/misc/articles/blend.exe">blend.exe</a> in the same directory with <em>*.mpk</em> file (<em>*.mpk</em> must be named <em>dm_temp.mpk</em>) and <em>Obj.txt</em> file. The last move associates meshes with the proper lighting maps.<br />
<strong>Note</strong>: Commonly, each <em>*.mpk</em> mesh has only one lighting map. However, some of the maps (instance <em>DM_ExMortis</em>) has the meshes with more than one lighting map. <a href="http://pkzone.org/files/misc/articles/blend.exe">Blend.exe</a> works correctly only on the maps where every single mesh refers to one lighting map.</p>
<p>Rename the resulting <em>dm_temp_blend.mpk</em> to original map name. Now the map is ready to be running in <strong>Painkiller</strong>.</p>

The problems of the brand owner, who was later bought out, was a reason why it was so long.</p>
<p>The DLC introduces two new levels for the singleplayer. The <strong>Small Church</strong> is a converted version of the map Fragenstein known to all from the multiplayer mode and the <strong>Unholy Stronghold</strong> that is modified Sacred. Both of these maps will give extra moments of fun during slaughter of lots monsters.</p>
